I have a 17" G4 Powerbook, and I do electronic music. I have a set of Rokit 5's as speakers, (75w powered monitors) and a 19" viewsonic monitor as an external monitor.

When the external monitor has any video on it, I get hum through my speakers. If it is unplugged, I don't... even if I have display on the monitor via it's internal menues.

I saw somewhere on a post after hours of searching that it has to do with AC bleed through onto my powerbook causing the hum.

I like my external monitor... and I need the monitors. Does anyone know of a filter, or a ground solution or something to fix this?

Thanks!

Are the display and the speakers plugged into the same outlet or a power strip? Try separating their power supplies, if possible.

Is that a CRT or an LCD display? If it is a CRT, try different resolutions and refresh rates to see if that has any affect. The analog frequency of the video may somehow be getting picked up by the speakers. A different frequency could fix the problem.

If available on the speakers, try playing with the bass and treble. They are essentially filters. There might be a setting where you filter out the noise but maintain the sound frequencies you want.

Also, does this happen with any other computers and this setup?
