My Name's david...

Alright, so I'm trying to choose a laptop, but I'm frustrated. overly frustrated.
I've went through so many choices on such a discerning budget, and such
a hunger for accessories, that I have decided on this slightly;

$1489 (CDN)
1 Ghz 12" Powerbook
IOGear Bluetooth Mouse
HD Upgrade
Memory Upgrade
MouseMan Traveler
Headset
USB Cable
Mousepad
Network Cable
Omniweb
iWork
Photoshop Elements v3

Do you think, for the money, my configuration would fit for medium photoshop work,
on-the-go use, and satisfy some hobbyist game design? As well, do you think
it is comparably fast in this day and age?

I need opinions..

I've got a 12" revB with the ram maxed out.

I use for web design and development (mostly PHP development).

I've got a local development apache server running all times, and is running along with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Sybase ASE database servers. [yes I am running 3 database servers and yes I am crazy]

I also code with BBEdit which is frequently always open.

When designing I often have Photoshop, Image Ready, Illustrator, or any combination of them open and running as well.

This in addition to many other apps I also frequently use or have open most of the time.

Never had a problem, except when the system became a bit sluggish because the maintenance scripts were not being run, because at 3-4 am my powerbook is sleeping.

Max out the ram and get something to reschedule the maintenance tasks to a more suitable time and you should be fine.

As for if the price is fair or not, I can't really comment.

Thanks for the reply -- seems it's alright, I'll try to find cheap enough RAM To max it out, however
I was intending for 768 MB... Thanks again, though.

I like my RevB. I had 768 Mb for awhile, but have just gone for the 1.25Gb. The stock 40Gb drive was a bit cramped and a bit slow, but I've just replaced that for a 120Gb 5400rpm drive and it runs a lot better.

A bit OT (please pm me about a new thread in Development), but how do you develop mySQL on a local machine, then sorta sync it with a server (that you have root to, of course). Do you have any info on this? I'm more on the design side, but find it's nice to test canned PHP stuff (like bbs type stuff all wrapped in a folder, and the like) but then have to go through the web-interface to reconfigure on the server side for the database. Thoughts?

Thanks.

But yeah, for the design-side. 12" 1.33GHz (don't think we should call it 'Rev.' since that implies a revision, so Rev. A would be the second PowerBook, IMHO) works great for me. Also, I have a secondary monitor in my studio: very important and helpful. I have a friend who programs and still uses his first version (what was the speed of that one?)
