I needed a new desktop computer at home. I own a Powerbook 15" 1.5 gig, and decided to use it with the monitor and keyboard that I already have. I have 2 gigs of RAM in the Powerbook, but it always seemed very slow. So I bought a La Cie extreme 160 gig external drive with Firewire 800 and transferred everything from my computer's 80 gig 2.5" hard drive to it and started from the external drive (note this is a Powerbook with Firewire 800). I was amazed. The computer now feels as fast as my 2.5 gig Power Mac at the office. It's so much faster than it was before that it's hard to believe it's the same machine. So for anyone wanting to use the Powerbook in a desktop setup, I'd strongly recommend the La Cie extreme or something similar, especially if you can connect at 800 megs a second.

I hate the idea of having a different user/data at home than on the road. Won't work for me.

yeah i gotta have it all in one cordless package for my lifestyle, but interesting theory!!

when i upgraded my hard drive from the stock 30gb 4200rpm to my present 80gb 5400rpm i noticed a pretty big speed difference, taking a powerbook apart is a PITA to get to the hard drive!
