(as far as i'm aware, this doesn't exist in mac, but maybe in pc is there such a thing as a very light laptop just with usb - wouldnt need dvd/cd drive; wouldnt need a whole lot of ram or harddrive space, but i would want a decent sized attached keyboard. It's mainly for writing, but the usb could give me the option of attaching externals

Try the AlphaSmart 3000 or Neo ( www.alphaSmart.com). These weigh aboutt two pounds, run 700 hours on 3 Double-A batteries, and port directly to the Mac (or Windows) by USB cable, or infa-red. Good for text entry, especially when moving around a lot. Not so good for editing, etc., but that can be done on your Mac.
Fixed the link! Glenn

The very lightest, most "bang for the buck" ultraportable laptop that can honestly be called a "laptop computer" is still the 12" iBook. We took the plunge (and became Mac users for the first time) when my wife needed a laptop for school and we started looking at size and weight versus capabilities. The 12" iBook with combo drive won hands down.
If all you need is something tiny to take minor text notes with, get a PDA with an external keyboard (I use my Dell Axim extensively). But for real computer use, I don't think you can do better than the iBook.

thanks, i took a look at the alphasmart webpage - i need it as much for editing as for writing - if it's not handy for that like Joe was saying (and the screen doesnt look very big - i prefer to see at least half a page, especially for editing) then i'm not sure it'd suit. i was hoping to find something maybe half the weight of a ibook..

Vaios are light and wonderful machines, but they're EXPENSIVE, particularly when compared to an iBook. REALLY, REALLY EXPENSIVE. Beautiful though...

Averatec has some 10" and 12" laptops which are quite affordable and quite light. Futureshop has the 12" models on sale quite often, and apparently Averatec's are more common in the U.S.
When I was considering my laptop for school, I almost bought one of those until I saw the iBook. I regretted not getting the Averatec for some time, but after a year, I've gotten used to the iBook and its advantages (5hrs battery, OS X, sleep mode, quiet operation, iSkin...).

Apple's smallest and lightest is the 12" PB, so you need to look elsewere if that's too big/heavy. If you have a lot to spend, try to get a ThinkPad X40, they are often offered on eBay for around $1200. If you don't need much horsepower, a used Compaq Armada M300 or ThinkPad 240 are very small, light and pretty cheap.

Is the 12" PB really lighter than the 12" iBook? It wasn't when we bought our iBook... On the other hand, weight wasn't the only feature we depended on-processing power per dollar was a biggie, and the iBook won hands down.

The iBook G4 weighs 4.9 pounds and the PowerBook G4 weighs 4.6. Hence the PowerBook is (ever so slightly) lighter, yes.

4.9 vs 4.6 pounds. Interesting. Of course the price point and "bang for the buck" had a great influence on our choice of the iBook, but that .3 pounds is interesting; I would have expected the PB to be a little heavier, being built with more metal.

Well, Aluminum is generally lighter than plastic, and very, very strong for it's weight, so I'd actually expect it to be lighter.
