It seems to be a periodic beep that occurs roughly every 3-4 seconds. It only occurs when the computer is "awake" and never when in "Sleep" mode. This has not always been a commonality for this computer - the sound just became noticeable within the last month. I don't know very much about the hardware of computers, but my first impression is that it may be some sort of warning system to alert the user of some internal hardware discrepancy with the hard drive. However, for some time now, I have been making use of an application called SMARTReporter that designed to identify hard drive problems. Thus far, SMARTReporter has yielded positive feedback for the hard drive’s condition. Does anyone else have any ideas that may help me figure this little noise issue?

I stand corrected on this issue. It appears that this sound is only produced when peripherals are connected via either of the USB ports on the left side of the iBook. My guess is that this may just simply be a conformation protocol for communicating that proper functionality is present.

I've not heard this on 3-4 ibooks or any other powerbooks I've seen. I'm not certain it would simply be a 'notification' sound.

I recommend having a tech at an apple store look at it, just in case. (that is if you live close enough).
