I'm a newbie to the forum, and pretty fresh to the whole mac scene.

I have a 12" G4 Aluminum Powerbook that's running the 'stock' configuration (40gb, combo drive, airport wireless, and 256MB of RAM). I'm looking into putting in as much RAM as possible, but I've been having trouble getting some straight information.

Most sites claim that the 12" AlBook 867 can only support 640 (128 onboard + 512 stick). But after some searching, it seems that some people are reporting 1gb+ is possible with the 'right' stick of RAM (something that the Powerbook won't be too finnicky with).

Can someone set me straight?

it is possible...the only reason most say 640mb is tops is because at the time there was no 1gb chips. they're available now and pc 2700 will work fine...so the total ram u could fit in that lil sucker is 1.12gb. hope that clarifies.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Hihi Shrugs*,

I have the exact same powerbook as you, and jusy recently put in a 1GB stick in there. It registers fine with OS X (Panther as well as Tiger), and so I have 1.12GB. And the RAM I bought was just generic RAM, though it is a higher spec (PC2700 as opposed to *that* powerbook's PC2100) than the powerbook takes... basically because they are cheaper :| It fits fine, I guess the PB just runs the RAM at PC2100 speed, which PC2700 can do no problem

Hope that helps

Terrific, thanks for sharing your experience with upgrading the RAM. I'll hopefully be running 1.12gb tonight :-)
