Either way it's not great!

My iPod has run out of charge. I lost the power brick a while back and have always charged it through my iBook's FW port. However, today, while it was still working fine as a hard disk, it was no longer recharging itself. I've done a search and other people have complained of FireWire ports that still charge devices but don't recognise them; my problem is the opposite. Has anyone else had this? Is it just what happens to iPods when their batteries finally give up? Or have I got a more complex problem?
