My new (2 weeks) G4 1.33GHz iBook just froze with a CD in the drive. Had to shut it down with the power button. Now it won't restart, just makes loud fan sound and screen stays black, no light at all.

Any suggestions of what to do next? (Repair show perhaps...)

Take it back to the shop.

In the mean time, try resetting thr PMU by pressing shift+control+option+power.
Wait five seconds then press the power button - press - don't press and hold.

If you can't get it back to life hopefully if you take it back to the shop they will be able to help you.

Have you made any hardware alterations - RAM etc?

Try unplugging all external devices.

Good Luck

Nope, tried resetting PMU but that doesn't work. iBook is unmodified and no external devices attached. I suspect it is a return to shop job!

Thanks.

Try removing the battery.

What were you doing at the time when it crashed?

Was it a kernel panic or just a freeze?

I've tried removing the battery and that didn't help I'm afraid. It wasn't a kernel panic, it just froze while browsing through a Keynote presentation which was on the CD.

Each time I try to restart the iBook a loud fan sound comes from around the screen hinge area (not the vents at the front left edge). Very strange.

Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

Hmmm.

Yes thats the fan at the back, there's only one.

Might i suggest leaving both the battery and power out over night? It might have an effect on the internal battery, I know it affected mine as the date and time got reset.

Tried leaving the battery out for 24 hrs but still no luck so the iBook is going back. I've been offered a new unit which is good, shame I'll have to spend a few hours loading and configuring it all over again!

Many thanks for the previous advice.
