I'm trying to decide whether I have a bad DVD burner, a Pioneer DVR-K05 that I just installed in my 12' powerbook 867mhz. It's correctly recognized and listed in the system info, and toast, itunes, etc is ready to use it. The drive's firmware is the latest, btw, at version 1.0.3 (drive was manufactured last month).

BUT, inserting any kind of media into it doesn't work. When I insert it into the drive, the media gets sucked in half an inch or so (at that point the disk is fully inside the computer), and less than a second later it spits the disk back out again. Grr.

Anything else I should try before sending it back and getting another one? Have others had this problem?

Thanks,

Stu

Hi,

i've got a problem with my DVR-K05 too.

While it can read and write cd's, it won't write neither read(lately) dvd's!!!

I've installed it to another machine with the same results....

I have no idea what is happening with this drive...

Do you think this could be a firmware error that could be fixed with a future firmware upgrade by pioneer or is my drive faulty?

Thanks

I HAVE YOUR ANSWER! I had the same exact problem with mine. So I called MCE who sells the same drive specifically for mac but under their name, and they have the solution...

When you remove the mounting brackets off the OEM drive and install them onto the new drive, the screws on the right side, (if your facing the drive as it is installed... or the side that has the angle to it), when tightened, interfere with the slot loading mechanism. MCE has washers that they include with their drives to alleviate the problem! They said it is common with all PB 15" and 17". They are sending me the washers even though I didn't buy from them.

To test their theory, I put the brackets on but left them loose so the screws were not tight at all on the bracket. I used tape to keep the brackets from rattling (kinda jury-rigged until the washers arrive)... cloased it all up and VOILA!!! IT WORKS!!!

So, call MCE tech support at 1-800-5000-MAC and they should be able to help you out.

Hope that helps,
Calimac
