I am having a startup problem with my Powerbook G4 1.67 running Mac OS 10.4.2. I have never heard of this happening before so I don't really know what to do.

Approximately every other time I turn on my Powerbook, it takes about 20-30X as long as it should to start. It will go through the same startup process as usual (Apple with spinning cog, startup progress bar, loading desktop) but each step will take up to 4 minutes. I have tried repairing permissions and running DiskWarrior (which found only minor problems) but nothing seems to work. It is so peculiar because it does not seem to happen every time, mostly only after I have turned on the computer after it has been turned off for awhile. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

If you don't shut down properly, then the startup process will take longer, since there are some extra checks that the OS does to make sure the disk and RAM, etc. are OK.

Are you having sleep problems, perhaps, when you put the PB to sleep but then the battery runs out prematurely and you have to restart the next time you plug in?

In addition to zapping the PRAM, I would reset the Power Manager, too. Unfortunately, each model PB has a different way to reset the Power Manager. Search Apple's Support site to find the way to do it for your PB.

Double check that your network settings are correct as well. Non existant or slow responding DHCP servers can add to your bootup time.

I tend to stear away from DHCP if I'm at home and make a new Network Profile. I use my "Home" which is set to a static IP to avoid network timeouts.

(Why does this feel like hotrodding? Shaving seconds off our boot times isntead of 1/4 mile? )
