Can my G3 iBook 500 take any other wireless card other than the original Airport Card?
Does it have a standard card slot that can accept a third party card like D-link?

The answer is Yes and No.

The Airport card lacks the built in antenna on the end (the black block that sticks out) and so it is smaller and will fit under the keyboard.
A standard PCMCIA wireless card would not.

A PCMCIA wireless card that is compatible with mac os x would work in the slot BUT the external antenna would be too big to allow the keyboard to sit down.

There is a wireless card from a certain brand of Sony Vaio that is in hardware identical to the original Airport cards (just a different sticker). Needless to say it works perfectly.

Are these any cheaper? I'm looking for an original Airport card for an old G4 tower I have, but I refuse to pay the $90+ that they usually sell for these days.

I've been looking on eBay and found airport cards to be cheaper than those.
The sony cards don't seem to be very common.

I am however curious to see if one of these would work.
It does say it needs Windows and doesn't mention Mac but the cheapness of them on eBay makes them very tempting.

Have you got one of those cards?

If you could try it that would be great.

The reason I think it may work it because it looks small enough to fit in the slot
