hello, i read through some threads but i couldnt find an answer. if anyone knows or has advice please respond. moving on. i have a G3 IBook 800mhz collecting dust, and decided to make it to good use. The plan is to get this thing functional in a car.

The first obstacle is taking off the lcd which i can do, but i would need to extend the lcd from the rest of the laptop, probably around 2 feet. i would guess theres probably 12 or so wires coming from the lcd, so i was thinking of using some 22-gauge hookup wire for extension. If that works, then im going to utilize a lcd mount so i can move it in any direction. I also plan on redoing the bezel in acrylic.

Im curious if that solution would work the laptop keyboard also. its extremely small to use, and it would save me having to buy a usb keyboard.

Im also getting a MacMini in a few weeks (free from gratis/freepay) and was curious if i could use the lcd as well. This may go in the car with the IBook, or just by itself all together. I know that using the lcd of a laptop requires the controller board, which i have.. despite that no one says how to do it if you DO have it. So any input is great.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

personally, I'd use the Mac mini and get one of the small LCD displays that have been used in TONS of car mods to date (check out http://www.123macmini.com for info on all sorts of neat things you can do with the mini). Besides, why bastardize a perfectly good iBook? You should be able to get some decent money for a fully-functional 800Mhz unit. (or pass it along to a friend or family member who would enjoy it!)

thanks for the response.

yea at first i was going with the Mini and Touchscreen setup. Then yesterday i pulled out my iBook and got the urge to mod it :] as for doing stuff with the laptop, i got it for 100 bucks almost 2 years ago (dont ask how!) so im not losing too much money here. unless i just sell it for just enough to get touchscreen.

the only thing holding me back is the money. being a poor college student and saving money for a future truck lift = broke for awhile, haha.

If you're planning on putting a iBook in a car you might be intersted in the Blue Cabbie Project.

I've thought about doing a similiar thing with my Key Lime iBook but my GF has taken it over and wont let me mod it until I get a new one.
