Just purchased (cheap!) as is. I'd like to get it up and running but I'm stuck -

On startup (from HD or optical) I get the chime and then a strange (tie-die) screen effect that grows until most of the screen is dark gray. It seems to boot as volume, keyboard lights and disc eject all work but no display.
Have checked the connections and the backlight is working, so is it the inverter, display, logic board or?

Thanks for any help you can offer, I'll try to find an external monitor today to check it with but if someone recognizes the symptoms you can save me the trouble.

Also note that the backup battery is missing.

cheers,

Paul

It's called a bloom, and it means there is no video signal going to the display. It's also really bad for the display, so do not keep it running like that. The video cable or graphics chip could be bad. I don't recall if you can run that in closed lid mode, but if you can, that's probably your only option.

As for the missing backup battery, I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to here. The backup battery is internal to the machine, so I'm not sure why you made a point of mentioning this.

Thanks, any suggestions for narrowing down the issue? Could it be a damaged cable? I understand they are rather fragile. Any and all help appreciated, it is in excellent condition otherwise and I'm looking forward to using it
