Hi, I've been thinking about this a lot and really can't make up my mind. I need a laptop for use in school and at home, I'll be using it for internet, word processing, cd (mabye dvd) burning, and some video editing probably. I have a dual 2.0 ghz G5 Rev. B at my house so I can use it for any really intense video stuff. Basically I'm stuck between the 12" Powerbook and 12" iBook. The iBook has a better battery life which is nice, but a smaller hard drive, and no dvd burner, also, I hear the iBook gets scratched easily. Hoping someone can help me decide here!!! Any suggestions would help!!! Thanks.

Since you say you already have a dual G5 PowerMac, just get the iBook. Save some money.

12" iBook for better battery life and wifi range.
You can put a bigger hard drive in the iBook. How often do you really need to burn a DVD on the road?
The iBooks scratch, the PowerBooks dent. Pick your poison.

The iBook has better WiFi? Doesn't the Powerbook have the same Airport Extreme card in it?

The metal of the Powerbooks actually interferes with wireless reception, so the iBooks generally have better reception. The 12" iBook is a great value and a nice computer. If you're looking for a portable solution and already have a desktop, I'd think that battery life would be a bigger draw than the Superdrive. I recommend the iBook as well.

Yes, but there's something with the PowerBook design that really limits range.
I don't think it's the widely speculated metal cover, as IBM's laptops have metal covers (Titanium, Magnesium, or Aluminum depending on series) and have great wifi range.

Do your really need to burn DVDs in the field? Do you need a 64 MB card? A faster processor? No, so save the $ and get the iBook. It can take more RAM, too.

Ive asked myself the same question over and over again. My only beef is that theres no Audio-In on the iBook. I could care less about graphics cause I got a good PC, and CPU isnt that much difference between 12" iBook and 12" Powerbook.

The quality of the audio-in on the PowerBook (as with most laptops) is poor. If you need to record in the field, you should buy a USB or FW audio device anyway.

Currently the iBook is a much better deal than the PowerBook in every way.
