Preface: I'm putting together an ibook from individual parts. It has a 500 mhz logic board, but I just overclocked it to 600.
Problem: When testing the stability of the system, I noticed that the fan did not come on even though the heatsink got really hot. I tested the fan with an electrical current, so I verified it works. I tested another fan by plugging it into the logic board; no dice.
My conclusion(s) (let me know if my thinking is correct):
1. The computer doesn't know it is getting hot because it can't sense the temperature.
Questions: Where is the temp sensing device? In the processor? Is it that small metal thing that sort of sticks through the heatsink?
2. The circuit is damaged (I wouldn't know what the heck to do if it is this).
3. The DC board isn't providing any power to that 'part' of the board (I have a spare DC board I will test when I have time).
Does anyone have any advice or know any technical information about iBook logic boards that could help me out?

Run the Apple Hardware test if you can.
That would test the fan and tell you if anything else was wrong.

Well, it seems that my Apple Hardware Test CD is only supposed to work with Powerbooks. Any other suggestions?

The fans in G3 iBooks rarely come on. I've only heard the fan in my 600 once, in over four years.

I think the fan should be coming on. It gets so hot that when I touched the heatsink, it burned my finger....then it kernel paniced.
I was testing it out with the iTunes visiualizer and two quicktime movies playing simultaniously. I would think that the fan should come on when it is that hot.

You could download Temperature Monitor to check the temperatures of the iBook.
This would show if the sensors are working as you should get a reading.
Have a look on eBay for an iBook Apple Hardware Test disc.

How many sensors should there be in an iBook? On mine, it is only showing the HD temp sensor.

I am using the same software.
Well, I bet there should be more than just the HD sensor. So it looks like my conclusion #1 is what is going on. I don't know what to do from here.
Could the fact that my logic board time battery (or whatever you call it) be causing this? Either that or there is some central chip that controls all the temp sensors on the logic board, and that is fried.

What OS are you running on your iBook G3?
I'm running 10.3.9 and apparently I have no sensors.
