I currently am using a 15" 1.67 PowerBook and will be traveling for two weeks in late December. Is there any inexpensive alternative to taking my Powerbook? Durability and size issues come into play here...

Perhaps a cheap 12" refurbed ibook as an alternative?

I would be using it for web browsing and uploading picture so a wireless card would be a necessity.

Is there a palce to rent ibooks?

TIA for any suggestions

You could go with a cheap refurb ibook or even a G3 Powerbook..
I've read they're great for simple tasks such as just surfing the net and e-mailing.
Don't really have to worry about the resale... You won't be losing too much value.

Another alternative would be if there are any local places that do rentals. But they're usually picky on the system and you don't really want to take the risk of like 20+ ppl have used the system if anything has happened to it.

The old G3 powerbooks are quite good for basics (they hold their value quite well though) ... but isn't the point of paying the premium for a powerbook the fact that you can carry the thing around and use it when travelling?

Check your city's Craigslist offerings, I've seen some great deals flying by on G3 ibooks and PB's

Have cash ready and be ready to jump in the car and go pick 'em up...listers are looking for a quick sale. I usually email them my cell phone # right off the bat, and make it clear I'm serious. Have met some great mac users and had smooth transactions so far with other CL'ers.

Good batteries and decent ram are worth a little extra IMO, and it's nice to have a second machine for travel.

I'll be leaving soon for an extended overseas stay, and just bought a new battery for my Pismo. My 15" Tibook gets delicate treatment, and I didn't want to constantly worry about it getting roughed up. I picked up the Pismo (from Craigslist) for just such occasions, but a G3 500 ibook or better should fit the bill nicely.

Happy travels.
Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

Yeah, a used iBook is nice enough for your needs. A Pismo would be really nice if you used it with two batteries. Think of the power....
