For a quick wireless network between the two, go to the Airport menu and select Create Network to create a computer to computer network. For something more permanent, just attach both machines to the router. It will act as a ethernet hub. Set up sharing on a drive or folder on one or the other machine to connect to. You need to enable file sharing in the sharing preferences.

A firewire cable also works and is faster for larger amounts to be transferred.

But you have to reboot one machine into Firewire target disk mode, making the machine useless until it's rebooted. I think he's referring to active file sharing.

That's only if you want to go into Firewire mode.
If you have personal sharing on, if two Macs are connected by a Firewire cable, then you hit your Finder > Go > Network and mount the other Mac. Neither are in Firewire mode, both can be running normally and either or both can share files. Of course, you have to set the level of permissions unless you just use the other Mac's Drop Box.
Much easier and faster than going into Firewire mode (and no reboot) and still faster connection speed than via ethernet.
