Run the Apple Hardware Test CD, if you can. You're probably looking at a hardware failure of some kind. The motherboard is a very likely candidate.
MacBook Pro 15" -- 2.2Ghz, 4GB, 200GB 7200rpm
iPod Nano 2G -- 8GB

Same thing happened to my 4th gen. 15" a few months ago. Turned out to be the main logic board--replaced under warranty. All has been well since.

Here's the beep definition:

1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58442

also, look at the following (breaking glass, beeps, usually related to RAM):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14438

Try a "safe boot" namely holding down the shift key immediately after the startup chime (or if you don't hear a chime, just count to 5 and hold down the shift key) until you get to the login screen (which says "safe boot" in red.) If that works, reselect the startup system in System Prefs and try a restart.

i've experienced this recently with my powerbook titanium; not sure how many beeps, maybe two or three. i was too surprised at the lowish sound coming out, i didn't think to count. this happened on a restart after a recently recurring freeze. it didn't reboot; the sleep light started flashing --one long, two shorts-- and would still be flashing now if i hadn't unplugged it and pulled the battery. it's frozen since, but no beeping. you mentioned RAM; what's up with it?

The RAM may be faulty. What do you mean by 'frozen'?

thx for the reply. Everything looks normal, i just can't do anything. if i'm typing, it stops displaying text in the middle of a sente ...cursor doesn't flash, trackpad or usb mouse don't move anything, keys don't work, no force quit w/ hotkeys, nada. I found apple's article on power on self-test beeps, which may be what i heard, but i can't get it to reproduce. I've been thinking about upping the RAM anyway, so it might be a good time to try some replacements...unless the slots are bad.

Edit: Nevermind, you have a titamium. The slots may still be bad but I have never heard of any reports on the titaniums having problems.
