Hi, i just bought a new 15" powerbook and this is the first mac i have owned. my problem is kind of weird and it isn't that much of a problem i suppose, but i would love some clarification. alright, well when i first opened the desktop icon: Macintosh HD, i instantly noticed the Home icon in the sidebar. I didn't understand the whole concept of shortname at first, so I changed the home icon name to the name i wanted. well, surely enough, my shortname became a folder under user. this confused me, so i tried changing my Home icon name again. Once again, a new folder popped up in users with my previously changed Home icon name. i opened one of the user folders and it had basically all these folders that were empty: domcuments, music, etc. etc. So I just went ahead and deleted both the user folders that had been created (this includes the one that was created based on my shortname) and went and renamed my Home icon to my original shortname. Once i did that, things returned to the way i wanted them to; that is to say, in the Users folder there are no more additional users, just my home icon with my shortname and the shared folder.

Now, here is the problem. Somehow through all this experimenting with what caused the user folders to form, and deleting the ones that were automatically created by changing my home icon name, I lost all my sidebar icons below the Applications icon. That is, the ones that said Document, Music, Videos, and Photos. Through opening applications, I have managed to get the applications to create their own folders, which i have then manually dragged into the sidebar. For instance, opening Garage Band made a Music icon be created under my Home icon, and I then simply dragged that icon to the sidebar. So I basically "cheated" to get my music icon back in the sidebar. I have been able to do this for documents and photos as well by opening word and iphoto and then dragging the folders those created in my home icon to the sidebar. The only one I haven't been able to get back is the video one, and I would like to know how.

Here are my questions: first, have i messed anything up or changed anything really? is everything the same as it was before i did all the crap i did? also, why are the new icons for music different than the original ones? at first it was just a default looking folder that said music. now there is a G clef on the folder and it looks fancier. also, how come when I go to preferenced under the finder tab and click on the sidebar option there is no icon for music, documents, video or photos to add? (It only lets me add or remove Desktop, Home, and Applications beneath the grey bar). I would like to know if this is standard, or if I have messed something up.

alright, well thank you all for putting up with my ignorance. i am very happy with the computer, but my general ineptness towards using macs is definatley making this hard for me. thanks again.

i would figure opening imovie would create the "movies" folder for you...

i doubt you've done anything majorly wrong... you may want to run disk utility to make sure the permissions and such are still fine... other than that, i would just leave everything as is...

No harm done.

The folders etc below the line are Aliases and can be recreated by dragging anything you want to area.(movies, tunes, photos, applications, etc)
