Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone else's machine is showing the symptom mine is having: I shut the lid to put it to sleep, and when I come back, I find that the machine has shut itself off (not gracefully), and I have to press the power button to reboot. There has always been plenty of juice left in the battery, so I know it's not that.

When it reboots, it does NOT use the SafeSleep image to do so; it is like a normal cold restart. I find that the system clock also tends to be reset to Dec 31 of some year.

I'm running under 10.4.3 (updated using both Software Update and the standalone Combo updater), and have a 3rd party 1 GB RAM stick installed.

Wrt the 3rd party RAM, I have noticed no other anomalies while the computer is running -- no unexpected crashes or what not. It's just when the computer is sleeping.

I'm just trying to gauge if this is only happening to my machine or if other people are seeing it as well, in order to determine what to do next. (I.e., I'm not keen on having to reinstall the OS...

tia!

I'm using third party (Transcend/Samsung) RAM and haven't seen this issue.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have experienced this a couple of times as well. in both cases I shut the lid, put it in my bag and when I took it out later it had shut off completely. I assumed that maybe the lid worked itself open in transit and it shut off under battery power.
Just a guess

now 10.4.3 but happened i think under 10.4.2

Just checking if I read the problem correctly: The PB is asleep on battery, and all of a sudden shuts down completely, needing a cold boot?

Sounds like the battery is somehow physically losing contact with the power contact points, whereupon the laptop just shuts down abruptly (and loses the date setting.) Something similar to this happened with the rev A Titaniums, where just picking up the laptop while on battery would flex the case enough that the battery lost contact with the laptop. Sometimes the battery would even just flop out of the Ti. Apple "solved" that problem by installing a thin rubber strip in the battery compartment, ensuring a tighter fit and forcing the battery against the power contacts. I used to keep a silved ductape strip over my Ti battery latch, so the battery wouldn't drop out.

'Course, it could always be something else...

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies... and it was as you've described: it would shut off while just sitting there sleeping on the table, no movement, no flexing.

HOWEVER, I reapplied the 10.4.3 Combo updater, and fingers crossed I haven't seen the symptom reappear for the past day or so. I'm hoping that that did it, although I'm slightly surprised that it turned out to be something software related (if indeed this fixed it).

Well, with my Ti-400, it could also be just sitting on the table when it might abruptly shut down. It's when I picked it up that the battery would fall out--but the battery had already lost contact just sitting there. Bad vibrations of something?

If it's software related, that's the best resolution of the problem. But I'd sure be curious what actually happened?

Yeah, no vibrations, unless there was an earthquake I wasn't aware of.

I'd like to know what it was too, but am just really glad it's not happening anymore.

EDIT: Oh, and I know what you mean about loose batteries, but this AluBook has a different mechanism than my old TiBook: the battery is seated much better and really doesn't seem like it can just fall out.
