I am having trouble with installing scanner software because my G4 laptop keeps telling me I do not have enough privileges error 1008:5,-5000. I've tried installing from the cd but it just boots up classic and then says its going to install but doesn't do anything apart from make the little wheel go round and round. I tried to change privileges but that didn't seem to make any difference.Any ideas?

Which OS are you using? If it's 10, then you probably need newer software. The software that you are trying to install is probably made for OS 9.
Apple Powerbook 17" 1,67 GHz, 2 gig RAM, 100 gig HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB, Superdrive 8X

Hi Sijmen, thanks for replying, I'm using OSX but have tried to use the driver from the epson website as well, thus the remarks about the privileges. I've tried to change them but it didn't seem to make any difference. Any other ideas?

I don't think this is the case, as I get the same error message when trying to install the OSX version of Kontakt 1.5 from the Native Instruments download site. The download goes fine, but once I run the installer, I get the exact same error message as glyn.

Wish I knew what the heck " access privileges " on my own computer meant. Nothing else I've installed has ever given me that error.

Glyn, are you using Tiger? I see the driver is for 10.2 and 3 only. It installs fine on 10.3.9.

Hi Sijmen, yes I'm using 10.3.9 too. I've tried using utilities to repair the permissions, but no luck with that either. (Scratching chin here!) Don't know what else to do!

Weird, you could remove everything that is 'epson' on the drive. type 'epson' in the search function from Finder en delete everything. You probably need to boot in safe mode to remove everything. Repairing permissions probably isn't necessary, but do it anyway. Boot to normal mode and install the epson software. I hope this will get things working. At least then there is nothing of epson on your system so the software doesn't have to deal with previous installments.

I would recommend NOT doing this. You should never throw away system files willy nilly. Though this is really not a Powerbook specific topic, I just tried downloading the driver and installing it on 10.4.3. No problems. You don't say at what point you get the permissions error, so if you can even get into the installer, choose to uninstall first then reinstall. Something is interfering with the installer, so cleaning out any files that it deems are a problem (rather than what you deem are problems) is the best way to go.

Hi Steve, the access permission denied comes up right at the end of installing and says not enough permissions. I have tried repairing the permissions, enabling the root and installing that way, but I can't get it to log anyone else in, although the user lists is on and the list of users is checked. There is a root user but it is not displayed as far as I can tell. Puzzled as what to do!Any help welcomed!

What are your account permissions? Are you the Admin or is your accound managed? The software will only be installed with the Admin account.

As I stated, did you try running the uninstaller first? Just select it from the pop-up menu in the installer.

Hi guys , I managed to sort it out by making another admin account user and installing from there. I don't know why the principal account wouldn't install it, hope it's not important. Thanks for your help, its much appreciated,
Glyn
