Hi,
I just received my very first Macintosh less than a week ago and can't begin to tell you how much I love it. It's a refurbished 15" 1.67GHz (not one of the brand new PowerBooks; one from the prior generation). I'm using OS X Tiger, FYI. If my job didn't require it and if I didn't already have so much invested in Windows software I think I'd ditch PCs altogether. But that's not what this post is all about...
I've set up my PowerBook to connect to my Linksys wireless and it's working perfectly. The only thing is that I have to reconnect to the wireless network every time I start up the PB or wake it from sleep mode. Is there any way to have the Mac automatically connect to my network when I start or wake it up, or do I just have to manually connect to it each time by clicking the little wireless icon on the menu bar at the top of the screen?
- Keith

Hmm.
That's not normal. As long as the router remains on and does not reset, your Powerbook should not loose its connection when waking from sleep. Sometimes there might be a slight delay in internet functionality as the network settings are re-established, but this should be measured in seconds.
Unfortunately I can't suggest what might be wrong in your case. All I can say is that I use two older Powerbooks running 10.3 & 10.4 and I have no trouble automatically re-establishing the wireless signal being served by a Linksys router after waking from sleep.

Go to System Preferences>Network>Show: Airport and under the Airport tab, you have the option to join a preferred network or automatically select one. Is your network one of your preferred one's? If not, add it to the list.

I am having a similar problem. It used to connect automatically until I enabled WEP. Now I have to select the network I want to connect to everytime I wake from sleep. In my networking preferences I do have it so it says to join my specific network but it never works.

Hi JKT,
I see which screen you're talking about, but I only have one choice in the "By default, join:" list, namely "A specific network"; "A preferred network" is not one of the choices. Any idea how to get that option to show up in the list?

This is an interesting point. I have WEP enabled as well. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Does anyone else have further insight into this?

Once you have added "a specific network", afterwords you'll be able to call it "preferred."
