Yup this is a new feature of the new Dual-Layer Superdrive models. Essentially the computer writes all of the RAM contents (i.e. all of your current settings and open windows) to the hard drive right before it runs completely out of power. So, then it goes into this "deep sleep" you describe, but if you notice, regardless of how long you leave your machine unplugged, when you power it back up it returns you to the exact state that you left the computer when it "died". This is a wonderful new feature, for those of us who always use the computer to the point where the battery just dies, so we no longer have to worry about saving files and quitting before the machine runs out of juice.
