i had my 17" PB plugged into my car stereo with a car-ready cassette thing, like i do all the time, but this time when i unplugged it from the headphone jack, there was a red light coming out and the built-in speakers wont play ANYTHING, even when i hit the volume buttons on my keyboard nothing happens, and the volume slider is dimmed in Preferences > Sound
i need help, please

No need to say that you need help. If you didn't, you wouldn't have posted your question.

The red light indicates that it thinks an optical miniplug is inserted, so it's outputting as digital optical. It has a little switch inside it to detect the optical plug, and somehow it got stuck.

Did you try inserting a plug back in and then removing it, to see if you can get it unstuck?

@ Sxates - If you're talking about optical out, I believe it was added in the revision before last. I haven't frequented the boards that much lately as I'm busy w/ school and broke anyway, so I'm not in the market. However, I can tell you that my 15" 1.5ghz machine doesn't have the optical out, and it's the revision where the machines were avaliable in 1.33/1.5ghz flavors (purchased summer 2004). I believe the next revision after I purchased had optical out, and the latest had the increased rez LCDs...

I wish mine had optical out... i'm using a sonica theater hooked to my z5500s and the drivers for the sonica theater are sub par...
