Can anyone give me an estimate on how much it would cost to fix this?

I have a 12" Powerbook and the backlight in the LCD no longer works. You can see the text and everything - but it's like viewing an iPod without a backlight. As you can imagine, it's rather frustrating. Would I need to replace the LCD? Should I grab one off of eBay and do it myself (even though I've never touched or replaced the compenents of a computer besides the RAM) or take it to my Apple Genius Bar and let them fix it? Any estimate on what it would cost to repair this?

Thanks!

The backlight for the LCD?

Er.

$300? $400? Somewhere in that area.

Is your PowerBook still in warranty?

Actually, it belongs to a friend of mine. He's thinking of just selling it as-is, and letting someone else fix it. It's a 1GHz G4 processor with 1.25GB of RAM, 40GB HDD, Superdrive... with Tiger installed. I was thinking of buying it myself and replacing it if it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. He's thinking he could still get $500-600 for it... is that too much to ask?

If you don't fix the backlight it would work great in clamshell mode.

A new Display would be expensive. But you can buy a backlight bulb and put it in yourself.
Find it here: http://www.wegenermedia.com/lcdpage.htm (for example). Its 70 USD. But check first if only the cable is broken.
