in a quite room i can hear a high pitched noise comming from my harddrive(might be the small fan). its not too loud, but you can still hear it and it sometimes becomes annoying. ive heard about the wooosh sound from the hd, i can hear that also which is also quite lnoisy, but there is also a high pitched noise. is this normal? i never really noticed it when i first got my powerbook (2 weeks ago) or should i have it checked under warranty.

That is probably the fan , my PowerBook makkes a high pitched noise from a fan to cool it off. The fan only goes off when you are running many apps at once or a big game. Or if you have the ven in the back blocked by a blanket or something. The vent is under the hinge and try to keep it open.

However, if the noise is not frm any of these accounts, then you might want to take it a bit more seriouosly.

x Kashmir out

Hi, I have the 17" pb and i sometimes hear the high-pitched noise when in a quiet room.

I dont think it is from the harddrive or the fan ( well not in my case). I noticed that the noise comes from certain brightness settings for my screen. On highest brightness i hear very little to no highpitched noise. and going darker it gets louder and then on a certain low setting i get no noise and then it starts again for other levels.

It is pretty odd... Also i get a highpitched noise when my pb is shut and plugged into the powr socket. So my conclusion it is to do with the power management/distribution hardware.

So have a go and adjust the brightness settings and see if it make a difference to your noise level.

I doubt that you will get any service or compassion from apple about it. Just hope you ahve your applecare warranty for 3 years so that if some of your hardware is a lemon then you can get it repaired when/if it goes bust.

Switch from Processor Performance: Highest to Automatic in System Preferences>Energy Saver>Options and see if it goes away.
