But to make sure some other process is not making your fan run, open Activity Monitor found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Click the "% CPU" column heading to arrange processes by the amount of CPU processing they require. The apps will jump around a bit, but if you see one of your applications taking an unusually large amount of CPU processing, simply quit it. When all apps are idle, you usually shouldn't see more than 10 or 20% CPU use. If you don't know what a process is, though, don't quit it yourself. Reboot the machine and check back in Activity monitor to see if things are better. If your CPU use is really low, but the fan is still going, you may have other issues.
