I just received my refurbished iBook G4 in the mail today from Apple. I checked the power on the battery and got two LEDs but it wouldn't start so I plugged in the AC. I proceeded to install Tiger with the included disks and get the system up to date. After I got everything up to snuff I saw my battery was at 100% so I unplugged the AC adaptor in order to condition the battery.

When I unplugged the adaptor the screen went black and it sounded like it shut off however there was still a slight hum if you listened closely. When holding down the power button you could hear it actually totally turn off and when hitting the power button to turn it on without the AC it would just turn the fan on really loud. All LEDs light up on the battery when the button is pushed.

So far the only way to get it to turn on is through AC power. I have taken the battery out and put it back in but I'm still getting the same problem. I also reset the PRAM but that did nothing for me.

Please help! I guess I'll be calling Apple Care in the morning

Just got off the phone with Apple Care, tried resetting this and that but no luck. They're sending me a new battery in the mail so we'll see how that goes. If that doesn't work I'll have to send it in for a tech to look at it and fix it up.

This kinda makes me want to get Apple Care, although its an additional $185 w/ student discount which is a little discouraging; was hoping to pick up a solid cheap notebook to finish off school with.

Don't let me down Apple, let this new battery fix everything!

I got a refurb iBook about a month ago that was dead on arrival. Even with the power plugged in, nothing. I was ready to send it back for a refund (Apple UK refurb store dont do replacements), when I saw a post somewhere on this forum that said if you leave the battery out for about 15-20 minutes, lots of things will be reset. I was sceptical at first, but lo-and-behold, it worked, and I am typing this on the same iBok about a month later.

I dont know if this is your problem, but hey, worth a try

I took out my battery as soon as I read this, just popped it back in after having it pulled for a hour or so and it booted it (which had done before) but didn't go dead after OSX booted. I just tossed in a DVD and have that going full screen to drain the battery to condition it, then I'll give it a full charge and see how it goes.

It did power up for a few minutes once before and then shut down but we'll see how this goes. Either way Apple has a new battery on the way so anything is worth a shot until the battery shows up!

Thanks for the tip! (I'm typing on my 3 year old Thinkpad which is loud and clunk, although before my iBook I thought this thing was slick! haha)

haha Nope, not so lucky, Apple took credit card information so if I don't send back my old battery within 10 days of receiving the new one, they're gonna bill me around $130 or something They're of course including the packaging and shipping slip so just a matter of swapping them out and putting it in the mailbox.

I'm in love with the iBook though!!! It's really incredible!
