As you might know from my last thread that I was looking for a flavor of linux to put on my computer, I've settled on CRUX Linux; http://crux.nu/cgi-bin/trac.cgi and i've already burnt the CD and i'm readdy to install in but i need some help, i really don't want to lose any data while patrioning my HDD ect. and i don't know many of the commands it refers to in the installation section, some help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. i have a 1.07 GHz iBook G4 running 10.3.9

P.S. CRUX Linux 2.0.1.1

This looks like another version of Linux that requires an X86 processor...

There is a PPC version but does it run on a Mac? It is doubtful without doing some major compiling. Why don't you try Yellow Dog or Mandrake or whatever it is called now.

on the supported processors it lists g3 g4 and g5, so i bet it runs on macs. but, if you read about it, it says its aimed at the advanced linux user. I'm not so sure thats the one to go with...I agree that mandrake or something similar would be a good bet for you. you can also get the ubuntu install cd for ppc. remember, with any linux distribution for mac you'll have to either have free space already on your hard disc for a linux partition, or you'll have to have a utility to resize your HFS volume (iPartition, etc). otherwise, you'll have to do a backup and reinstall and leave space on your disc when you partition it with Disk Utility during the OS X installation

Crux PPC is the Crux distro for Macs.

Mandrake is now Mandriva.

i just downloaded crux and messed with it...if you're even slightly unfamiliar with linux, whether its on a x86 or mac, crux probably isnt for you. you have to build your installation from the ground up (compiling kernel, unpacking packages, etc)...distributions with a GUI installer are much more suited for what you want IMO

I see, thanks, what flavor of Linux do you requmend? I want it to last me a while, so maybe something intermediate? The thing i'm really worried about is partitioning the HDD, i'm going to look at iPartition right now too.

Edit: Looked at iPartition... is there any free programs that do this? Or is this REALLY worth the $35?

Get a backup drive, both on general principle, and because it will be more useful in the long run than spending $35 on a partitioning app that I wouldn't trust anyway.

As for Linux distros, I recommend Ubuntu.

Also, according to the iPartition website, it's $45.

an external drive would make lots of sense actually. as of now, the AP-extreme isnt supported in linux anyways, so mobile computing is somewhat limited anyways...but you get home and plug in your eth cable and fw hard drive and boot up linux and have fun...that also keeps your data somewhat safe on your internal drive

So, could I just partition part of my iPod off and install Ubuntu there? (I've tried the live CD of Ubuntu and it was pretty limiting, the CD that is, so i really didn't get a great feel for it...)

i'm not sure if the ipod idea would work, but i really dont know why it wouldnt (i dont own an ipod so i am not much help there). the livecd is more of a "see if this works with my hardware" kind of deal. a hard drive install of it is much better in terms of usability/performance

No, you can't boot Linux off an external drive at this point. I meant you should get an external drive to backup your internal, so you can repartition it.
