On my Palm I can beam memos and other stuff from it to my iMac using Bluetooth. My TiBook doesn't have BT (and I don't want to buy another dongle) but it does have an infra-red port. Is there any way I can use that for the odd file exchange? I don't want to do a full hotsync via infra-red?

What's so bad about a small USB dongle that you plug in when you want to beam a file over? It's not even as hard as messing with a cable...

What's so bad about Apple writing software for the hardware it makes? When was it decided that OBEX (OBject EXchange) was only going to be used with Bluetooth, since that specification was lifted from the IrDA specs by the Bluetooth SIG and it's real name is IrOBEX? Heck, the whole Bluetooth stack and model were lifted from IrDA.

It's just Apple trying to sell more new computers, like letting go of Firewire on the new iPods when only in the last 2 years it has provided USB2 to the Mac masses. (heck, even the Powermac G4 MDD only had USB 1.1!)

Sorry for the rant, but it's a sore spot. And are your sure that an IR dongle would solve this problem? I don't think that Apple has the software piping installed.
