I have an Ibook G3 600MHz with 384MB of Ram and a 20GB HD and would like to upgrade from OS 10.1.4 to either Panther or Tiger.
Any advice; I'm afraid that with Tiger, my Ibook would be too slow.
Thank you

I run Tiger on my ibook which is a G3 600MHz and it runs great. It's not slow, in fact it seems faster with Tiger than it did with Panther.

If you can, max out that iBook's RAM, to 640 MB. 384 MB is the absolute bare minimum for both Tiger and Panther. (Choose Tiger simply because it's the latest, and it's very nice.)
With Tiger, it should work OK even with 384 MB, but I'd turn off all the Dashboard widgets. Also, you might want to try a browser that doesn't use a lot of RAM. Shiira is an example.

I have run both Panther and Tiger on our 600MHZ G3 iBook. Both are MUCH faster than previous operating systems and cause zero problems. You will be amazed at the difference the upgrade will make.

I've got the same iBook, same memory, only I've installed a bigger hard drive. Tiger runs great on it, although I really only use it for web surfing.

Tiger will breath new life into that iBook. Go for it!
I would recommend doing an Erase and Install though. Do a custom install to avoid wasting hard drive space on languages and printer drivers you don't need. The basic Tiger install is less than 2 gigs.
Back up your home folder somewhere first, of course.
Good luck!

If you clone your iBook using SuperDuper! and then do an Erase and Install, you can use Apple's Migration Assistant to transfer all your custom settings, apps, etc. back to the new OS. Works like a charm, but you will need an external drive or another Mac with a free partition for the clone.
Keep in mind that you should upgrade software, drivers, etc. so that your iBook will work properly with Tiger. I have run into apps that worked fine with Panther but didn't make the grade with Tiger. The difference between 10.1 and 10.4 is even greater... I think that you wil be amazed at the differences between 10.1 and Tiger.
Using an external drive with an iBook is very convenient for back-ups and provides plenty of space for a large iTunes music folder, a scratch partition, etc. Having a bootable clone of your iBook means if your iBook drive ever heads south (and my G3 600MHZ iBook did just that a tad short of three years after I bought it...) you can use the cloned system to run another Mac while the iBook is being repaired or you can transfer the clone data to a new Mac.
