For the second time in a year, my HDD is giving me problems. Here's the situation:

- I often get the "beachball" when loading applications.

- The drive makes an audible sound that can be described as "read-read-reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeead" over and over, in a systematic pattern when giving me the beachball.

- I can no longer use Diskeeper to do backups. It fails every time.

The last time this happened, it was accompanied by a violent parking of the drive heads - noticible by a large CHIRP - and the drive ended up failing and being replaced. When it was replaced, it turns out that it has the 7200 RPM drive, which is what they replaced it with (I bought it refurbished and was unaware). This time, I have booted off one of my old backups on the external firewire drive, repaired permissions successfully, and tried to repair the disk, which failed. It fails when trying to rebuild "Catalog Tree B" or something to that effect.

Now, when I boot the Powerbook, I have the grey screen with the Apple and the spinning icon underneath it. It gets no further. When I boot off a backup and start disk utility, Macintosh HD does not show up.

Anyone have any ideas, and do I have any hope of recovering data on the drive? We have baby pics on there that have never been able to be backed up.

If you can view the contents of the drive while booted off of the external then just drag and drop the contents onto your backup drive.

As of right now, I'm running off the install DVD and using the disk utility.

The drive in question can be seen, but will not mount.
