Great Review! Thanks for posting the reference, I've now got it bookmarked! Just the sort of useful article that comes in handy for answering all sorts of questions about replacement drives, like which is the quietest, etc.

It's good to see some actual noise and power/heat measurements (instead of just the manufacturer's stats) and the comparisons to desktop drives and analysis is quite revealing.

The intro commentary is also great: I shudder everytime I hear of somebody using a laptop as a server (or a mini, what with the laptop HD) or even running SETI and the like. Yes, it can be done, but you're sure shortening the life of the HD...

Running SETI is hardly disk intensive, but in general I agree. If you're doing a lot of work with the disk, buy one of the 2.5" disks designed for servers (like Hitachi's E-series).
