alright i have a head set that i bought with a mic for online games, but while i have the headset plugged in the internal mic still picks up noise. i can tell because my roommate was getting nasty feedback while we were playing world of warcraft, but once i turned the mic volume down in the system preferences it went away. i see in the input window in the system preferences the two mics, the internal and the headset, but when i turn down the input volume on the internal, so does the external also. i hope this all makes sense, and thanks in advance.

What you are describing isn't making much sense to me. If you have an external mic plugged into your machine, and you select it as your input source in System Preferences, then your interanal mic should be disabled. System preferences won't let you select more than one input at a time (I think). So the feedback could very well be coming from your headset mic. (assuming it's been selected in system preferences)

Another question i must ask...you are hearing your system sounds in your headset and not your internal speakers???

For elimination purposes, I'm assuming your fan will come on while playing, so do you hear that in your earphones, or does your friend hear it? It's quite noticable.

you can select what you want for audio input in the audio settings. If your microphone operates via USB, you should be able to select it from the pulldown list.
