Weird Function Key problems + application speed

	I just bought a new 12" powerbook. The speaker volume keys worked for one day, and now make a weird beep when I hit them. Also, I can't turn on num lock anymore. Any ideas? I bought a num pad, would that have cancelled my num lock feature? Also, why is it that the applications I'm running on my G4 tower, at 1.25GHZ, run faster than on my 1.5GHZ powerbook? This is frustrating. More memory maybe? (I can't play the Sims! It's my guily pleasure...)
