Hi.

I've got a odd problem with my 12" iBook running Panther. If I shut it down completely it drains the battery pretty fast down to 0%. It drains more than 50% overnight.

I've tried reseting the PMU, no help there. Would a upgrade to Tiger help? Has anyone of you heard about this problem before? I find nothing about this on google.

Thanks in advantage!

Hi,
It should not do that under Panther so I do not recommend the upgrade to Tiger as a fix to this problem - (Get Tiger if you want its new features)
I have not heard of this problem, I tend to sleep my 2001 iBook and it will empty the battery (i.e make it so it will not run) in about a day and a half. I hardly ever shut down and so I cannot comment on how my battery lasts when shut down.
My Battery is old and I only get about 1.5 hours use out of it.

Questions:
1. How old is the iBook+Battery?
2. What happends if you shut down, then remove the battery for a night - what charge does it show the next morning?
3. Have you checked the battery/iBook contacts - it is unlikely, but possible there is a resistance discharging the battery - use a non metallic fine brush to clear any debris on the contacts.

And finally, some batteries do 'go bad' and self discharge - I'm not sure if Lithium ion fall into this category when they get old - if you know anyone else with an iBook who might be kind enough to lend you their battery, you try that to see if it is just a bad battery.

If I put it to sleep, it drains, but that's natural. The drainage when it's turned off isn't.

1. It's probably about a year old. My niece bought it and she has been using it until now.
2. I tried this, but only for few hours (enough time) and it didn't drain at all. So I can rule out that this is due to a bad battery.
3. I don't see anything but if the drainage is because of dirt on the contacts it should also drain this fast when put to sleep.

I'm going to try to get one lend, but it won't be soon. Thank you for your answer, I appreciate all help that I can get.
