On news from what appleinsider is reporting http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1406 what do you guys think the odds would be a late drop on prices on lapttops to boost holiday sales?

Apple generally doesn't do stuff like that. As Christmas approaches, who do you think will lose this game of chicken and flinch first ? Apple, who's raking in record profits or the teeny tiny sliver of people who would buy an iBook at, say, $899 but wouldn't at $999 ? I think when push comes to shove, the people who really want an iBook will find the extra $100 and Apple knows this. If Apple loses a tiny few number of sales because of the price, it probably will affect their bottom line less than if they started getting $100 less on each and every iBook sale.

My 2 cents ... though of course I don't really know

Has it happened before? I'm pretty sure not. If they drop prices, and that's rare, they usually do it when they refresh the line.

Question then, when they release the new line(mactels), will they still offer PPC on their website at reduced prices until they clear out that stock? I dont see them doing that, but i was wondering.

Amazon has their iBooks listed with an instant $100 manufacturer's rebate, in addition to Amazon's own rebates ($100 on 12", $125 on 14"). Either stock is plentiful and moving slowly, or new iBooks are just around the corner (SF in January?), or both.

That brings the Amazon price down to $799 after rebate. No tax and free shipping makes this a really good price. But then again if the rumors about the next gen intel based ibooks being ~$700 are true, then $799 may not be such a great deal afterall.

Just took another look at the Amazon deal and saw that you can get a free mighty mouse w/ the ibook. If you qualify for the a9 discount then the ibook with a mighty mouse is $784.89. Wow.

Today Amazon dropped the price of the 12" Powerbook with Superdrive by $150. That's in addition to their $150 mail-in rebate, for a total of $300 off. Save a bit more with the a9.com discount if you qualify.

I really like the feel of the Powerbook's keyboard better than the iBook. Plus, the other added features of the Pbook, such as larger, faster hard drive, built-in DVD burner, etc. Factoring in the cost of replacing the iBook hard drive with a larger, faster one, the difference between the two (after all discounts, rebates, etc.) is about $250 for me. I'm seriously considering springing for the Pbook.

ya but what is messed up is that the 14inch ibook which is the one i want, is still 1299 even with the so-called 100 instant rebate. I contacted them and they said that the normal price of the 14inch is 1399, i was like Umm no its not. But they said that there was nothing they could do. WTF!

Oh and i do not want a 1st generation Mactel.

I've noticed a tendency for some site to overprice the retail so it sounds like you are getting more of a discount. Amazon usually doesn't do this, though.

I wish they'd knock about $200-$250 off the 14" iBook and I'd be all over it. I don't want to spend more than $1100 on a 'Book, but I don't want a 12" screen.

the instant rebated ended on monday. It was on the 12 inch but as posted above they said they had one on the 14inch as well, but they still kept the price at 1299. jerks. I filed a complaint with the BBB
