I have a TiPB 867 using OSX 10.4.3. I use a Buffalo WLI-CB-G54A works perfectly. No drivers needed.

I realize that the old AirPort cards are quite expensive now that they are no longer produced, but I find that having a card mounted internally is much more convenient than one that sticks out the side of your laptop if you move your laptop around. On the other hand, if your laptop is stationary all the time using a PCMCIA card may not be so bad and would probably offer better range...

Also, if you decide to forgo the AirPort card, you may consider a card that supports 802.11g or a USB2 802.11g adaptor as 802.11g is much faster than 802.11b.

Would that model work with an old Pismo 500 MHz PowerBook?

I had a Ti-400, the internal airport range was notoriously bad. I mean disastrously, ridiculously puny. Nothing could be done to extend the range, although I did try a Range Extender antenna on the graphite base station--which gave only 5 extra feet of puny reception.

I first replaced the airport card with a Cisco Aironet 350 in OS 9 and X, then the Buffalo.

The airport range difference was night and day. Return the card and get the Buffalo.

I bought a Belkin 802.11g cardbus for my Titanium 550MHz. It has worked flawlessly, with excellent range. In fact it beats the pants off of my 12" Powerbook with airport extreme. AFAIK any card that uses the broadcom chipset should be recognised as airport, no drivers needed.

Well I have a rev A G4-400 TiBook and after my internal airport hardware died, i replaced mine with a Motorola WN825g card. Its fully Airport Extreme compliant, no extra software to install (uses the native airport drivers), has great range, and is only $18. Can't go wrong with that!

Here's someone else's experience with it:

Here's where to order it:

thanks for all the advice people - I ret. the airport and got a buffalo - I can connect to my friends airport from about 15 or 20 metres away through a few walls plus it was heaps cheaper. Actually its really funny here in tokyo if you walk around with your laptop open you see wireless networks everywhere.... everywhere except my own place...... but I could get free internet if was willing to sit out in the freezing cold park........brrrr......

Congrats on the switch! I remember feeling like I had a new PB, all due to finally having great wireless range. My Ti-400 could finally hold up its head when placed next to an iBook.

Sounds like you'll really be injoying the park next spring and summer!

If you have a TiBook, the internal Airport range makes it compelling to use a Cardbus wireless card instead.

Now, I have a Pismo. On this machine, I don't have range problems. What I don't have is the money for an Airport card. The prices are ludicrous!

I was very fortunate to find the Buffalo wireless card at target.com for $25 (quite awhile ago.) I expect there will other such deals out there for those with enough patience and persistence to find them.

The internal card would need to be an 11.b card whereas the PMCIA card could be either 11.b or 11.g

So, getting a PMCIA 11.g card would give many advantages, such as better encryption (can 11.b do wpa? hmm, can't remember?) and better throughput if you connect to a network.

Hi

I was wondering if you could tell me exactly which buffalo card you bought?
I'm also in Japan and can't find the models that other people have recommended here.

Thanks

here's a link to a whole list of wireless cards

http://home.earthlink.net/%7Emetaphyzx/Wireless.htm

this is the buffalo card I used

http://buffalotech.com/products/prod...p;categoryid=7

main thing to remember is that manufacturers sometimes change the internal chip based on availability and pricing-discounts without changing the documentation. in other words, be sure you've got a generous return policy.

Okay, I bought a Buffalo cardbus card, however, it appears I bought the wrong one. I bought a WLI-CB-G54L, and when I insert it into my TiBook (400mhz) the laptop says there is no device inserted, so it's a no go.

So, seeing as this stuff changes weekly, what cardbus cards are you guys CURRENTLY using that will work in my Powerbook? I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router to hook up to my G5 so I can let my kid use the Powerbook and stay off my computer.

Find a cheap dead airport base station on Ebay ~$20 and open it up and Voila, you have an Airport
card that fits in the pcmcia slot and the built in antenea increases range over internal card!
