I've heard a lot about the new Intel-based iBooks and their imminent release in January. I wanted to go get my 15" Powerbook tomorrow. If the 15" Powerbook will soon be in Intel form, then maybe I should wait. Or is the PowerBook coming out in June, like I heard at one place?

Short answer, "yes" with an "If," long answer, "no"--with a "but."

Well...Steve and everyone involved in the production of the new Intel Macs, who are probably sworn (and contractually bound) to silence.

I used to know someone who knew someone who used to work for Apple. And according to information I read on another internet forum, Intel Powerbooks are definitely going to be released in January.

MY brothers, sisters, girfriends, mothers, wifes, doctors, gardeners boss who used to work in Cuppertino told her that Intel PB's were NOT coming in January...
Allegedly....

Speculation has been that Intel-based iBooks may be out by Jan, but that PowerBooks probably won't see light till March or so.

Well, if you're just looking at AppleInsider and Think Secret, specualation for January Intel announcements has included iBook, Mac mini (including a living room edition), PowerBook, and iMac. Then, depending on who's reporting, the iBook or PB or mini announcements will follow in the spring.
My money is on the mini for MacWorld. I also think there'll be a laptop announcement before spring, either just iBooks or iBooks + 1 PowerBook model. Before spring means possibly MWSF, but maybe in Feb or March.
But I'm babbling, and like everyone else was implying, your guess is as good as mine.

You're late to the game, I already placed my order online at the Apple store for my Intel Powerbook. Price wasn't too bad.

I predict they will actually be much... much worse. It's all part of Apple's business plan.

The whole transition is scary to me, especially considering the steam that Apple has been building due to the "halo effect" of the iPod. I hope this doesn't kill Apple's PC sales.

I'm definitely a big fan of AMD also. My desktop (which I unfortunatly don't have with me at college) is an AMD 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ speeds. AMD chips have always been cost effective (though this might not be as true today as it was when I built mine). They were great "geek" systems. However, intel has some great notebook chips, I would say that when the software starts to be made natively for the intel macs, that they will probably blow the PPC macs out of the water. However, there's no telling exactly how long it will take most software companies to do the switch, that's the iffy part...
