I would like to watch some movies I have on my 17in Albook on my 27in Sony TV. Both have s-video. How is the quality? Are they any settings I should change to make it look the best?

Thanks!

I think it goes, in terms of quality:

Coax (RF munged video+audio)
Composite (yellow RCA)
S-Video (the 4-prong plug you mention; also the same as the old Apple ADB cable)
Component (three RCA video plugs)
DVI
HDMI (?)

S-Video is fine, really on a CRT 4:3 (regular) TV. It looks great to me at 27". Though component video is quite nice. Dang. Now I really want to go into debt to get an HDTV.

Also, go into System Preferences --> Hardware/Displays and you can have spanning displays, i.e., the TV can not only mirror, but be an extension of your desktop. QuickTime Pro --> Present Movie works real well.

HDMI is actually just about the same digital signalling as DVI, but includes signals for digital audio in the same cable.

The same copy protection is used on DVI; that is no different from HDMI.

As for S-video settings: the Mac lets you set a resolution for s-video output. This resolution is then scaled down to NTSC or PAL video's resolution. Because of this, lower resolution settings often give you a better picture, or the same with less artifacts from scaling.

I usually use 640x480 on S-video, because that's the closest to native NTSC.
