okay, apple state on the website that one can swap batteries on the new 17" w/o shutting it down but just putting it to sleep.

I usually use my PB at home w/o the battery (outlets everywhere). now, say I operate the PB w/o battery in one room, and want to move to another... could I just put it to sleep, disconnect the A/C, plug it in again and wake it?

In theory you could, but why chance it? And why don't you have your battery in?

I have a Rev A 17" PB and often hot-swap batteries. I do this especially when I'm flying and using the computer to watch a movie. The batteries are old and I get less than 2 hours from each one, not enough for even one movie. I just close the lid, pop out the old battery, pop in the new one, open the lid and after a few seconds of the spinning beach ball the movie picks up where it left off. No need to shut down. Just good to go.
