I have an older iBook (G3, model M6497 running 10.2.3). Out of the blue, the trackpad has stopped working. It wasn't a progressive thing -- one day it was there, the next it wasn't. A mouse plugged in via USB works fine. The curious thing is that when I go into System Preferences > Mouse, it's doesn't even give me a tab for the trackpad -- it's like the trackpad doesn't exist anymore (leaving only the USB mouse settings).

The lack of a trackpad tab makes me wonder if it's purely a software problem, but as luck would have it I don't have any installation CDs to try to reinstall OSX (I'm taking a look at the laptop for a friend of mine who bought it second-hand). So, other than trying to hunt down some installation CDs on the chance that a reinstall might fix it, does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?

I'm using an ibook G4/800 and am using a mouse almost full time. Pretty sure it's a software glitch since the track will work fine for awhile, then start stuttering to the point where it won't function at all unless I can move the cursor over to another open program. For instance, if I have VLC open, it's quirky, but get it over onto Safari, click on safari, then the cursor will be fine. Tells me it has to be software.

Have to find the install discs, and eventually do a reinstall.

sounds to me like a bad connection, i have heard of a few ibooks in which case the trackpad went out. You can buy one, and a whole new casing for it on ebay for cheap
