My brother called me with a problem last night: his original 12 in PowerBook can't find it's DVD drive. He's running 10.4.3, and I took him through the common sense cures, but to no avail: Disk Utility doesn't see the drive, and trying "drutil list" in the Terminal doesn't list any devices.

Anyone had a similar problem who has a cure?

Having helped design the first 12", I can tell you that there was a problem with some of the optical drive flex cables gettng cracked. This would obviously prevent your machine from seeing the drive. You'll probably need to take it to an Apple store or somewhere else to get this fixed.

Eeek. Thanks.

He's headed back to school in January. I will tell him to wait and take it to the campus store, as they will be much cheaper than anything else.

ibook_steve is absolutely right, I just had to replace the optical flex cable in this 12" powerbook, What a pain!!! Right after the original combo drive malfunctioned and died. Now my 12" has a sweet dual layer dvd burner though, haha. Pioneer dvr-k05!
