Hi all, I'm a newbie to the forum... I could use some help.

I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 2 years now (I know a milloin years in computer time), and lately it's just gotten so slow. I have 256MB of RAM right now, and it's gotten me this far, do you think i need to get some more? I've got through all my files, and done a lot of purging. but no difference. if i were on a PC i'd run a defrag hopefully clearing some space. I ran MacWasher, a few weeks ago, but no change, i tried to run it again today, but it froze - froze!! i feel like i'm back in OS9 for a minute.

any advice you could pass along would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Did stock PowerBooks in the past two years ever come with this little RAM? Maybe you have defective RAM?

you definitely need more ram. 512mb is the minimum now a days if you want decent performance. what kind of powerbook is it? 867mhz or 1ghz? you might wanna empty out your hd if it has less than a gb of space left, but if it has more than a gb...i doubt thats the culprit.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

If more RAM doesn't do the trick, I'd back-up (just in case) and do a clean reinstall.

That will keep all of your user data and reset your preferences and settings (but it throws the old ones in a labeled folder for safekeeping).

I double-checked 256MB RAM stock. I have 17GB available of 37.25 total on the HD., so I don't think that being "too full" is the problem.

Guess I'll look into another 512MB or so, that oughtta fix me up.

Thanks for the help!

I just checked my Rev B PB and it too has 256 MB RAM built-in (stock config). I forgot that I had added 512 MB as soon as I had purchased the laptop. Doh!

You definitely need to add more RAM.
