I have a 1.6GHz powerbook, and the ALS used to work. However, now the buttons in the keyboard that control keyboard backlight and screen brightness through the ALS just don't work. The keyboard seems fine, since the num lock and caps lock keys light up when pressed. If I go to the system preferences, and try to find the options that control keyboard backlight or screen brightness, they just don't show. It's as if the ALS feature was just not there, or not detected.

Is there a way of checking for ALS detection by the OS? or does this mean that the ALS in my powerbook is busted?

I was having that problem too. I repaired permissions and rebooted. That fixed it temporarily. But sometimes it goes out again. Sometimes it just stays on all the time, then goes away again. I'm going to take it into apple to see if it's the sensor.
