I've searched around a little on here and other sites. I'm am sure out there somewhere is the answer I'm looking for, but I'm having a hard time finding it and I need my PowerBook up and running ASAP.
Part of my problem sounds very similar to what is going on in this thread. http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...ighlight=ichat
My problem specifically is this:
My ichat has a very difficult time connecting as of the past month. I will get a message saying "Connection timed out". I have since reset my router multilple times, all to no avail. I have to try to connect at least 10 times or so before it does....if it does at all. This happened out of no where one day. I had not installed anything or messed with any settings.
In addition...about the same time the ichat problem started the PowerBook also starting bahaving generally quirky. Safari will freeze, the pointer will get stuck or move in erratic motions, and the computer will work very slowly overall. What I am most worried about is when I get the color wheel now, regardless of program, the computer will get VERY HOT. Almost too hot to touch. The only way I can remedy it from here is to do a complete shut down. If I just close the program the computer will continue perform slowly until I eventually shut it off. Even with all programs closed and exited the CPU will be running at over 90% ( I checked inUtilities----> System Monitor).
I'm continuing my research, but any advice that can be provided would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Carl

There's a way to reinstall all your system files for Tiger without affecting your user folders at all. You should try that. I forget the exact steps, but basically you boot off the Tiger CD and choose that option. Try the Apple knowledge base on how to do that.
I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that'd fix your problem.

Ye, when you put the install disks in, and enter the reinstall menu's, you will have the option to 'Archive and Install'. This will keep your home directory, and hence all your user files.

You should also be aware that the "archive and install" option leaves a huge "old system" folder with a ton of files in it, probably will want to delete that to save HD space after things settle down. A few applications will have to be reinstalled, updated, like Stuffit Deluxe and input method applications for Japanese like Egbridge. Most application survive the install intact. It is the most painless install method available, just don't forget to upgrade everything and run the disk utility repair permissions.
On Panther, there seems to be a glitch with old install packages left in the library/reciepts folder: see xlr8yourmac.com for details, the glitch makes running repair permission cough....
Good luck
