Addressed to all users of new Macbooks (congratulations!)!

What else other than OS X does the MacBook boot natively under?

Best regards,

MacBooks don't ship until the middle of February, so it'll be a while before MacBook owners can answer.

Your question is a little confusing, though. What do you mean "boot natively"? Its only native operating system (in the sense of coming with and being designed specifically for the computer) is Mac OS X. Any Intel-based OS could conceivably run, though they may require varying degrees of trickery (for example, to make them work with EFI).

Sorry about the confusion.

I was wondering whether the new Intel-architecture allows for the installation of a seperate Windows or Linux environment, say on a separate partition.

Best regards,

Assuming you can get it to dual boot with windows (diiiscuuusting, please don't don't do this unless you'd absolutely have to!), I don't see why it would not work with linuxii , *BSDs, BeOS, pretty much anything that works with your typical PCs assuming the target OS has kernel support for the intel duo processor (+keeping in mind its tougher to find support for all lappy h/w... like good luck getting driver for airport extreme working!).

The questions is why? What's the point on a new machine besides being able to boast that you did it? If its for UNIX stuff, why not just use X11 (with darwinports or fink). Everything is going to be a major step down from OS X.

I wouldn't waste my time nor hd space (nor would I want some ugly bootloader to show its face during bootups). Maybe its nice to know that down the road (like years later) the option to retask an old MBP as a fileserver, or whatever...and linux or bsd (which can be installed without gui stuff) is less resource hungry... then maybe I could see the logic.

Btw, this might be news to some... Powerbooks already work with PPC versions of Linux (apparently Linus Torvalds is using a G5 PowerMac with Linux). Check out yellowdog.
