If we are pre-ordering the MacBook or any other mac for that matter, when does the warranty/applecare start?

Does it start on the day that we placed the order? or the day that we receive the computer?

Applecare's pdf of terms and conditions say that applecare starts the day after the initial warranty ends.
Applecare's website says "three years from the computer's purchase date"

so does pre-ordering cause us to lose a month of warranty/applecare?

I believe it starts the day they ship it from the factory or they day it arrives. Certainly not the day you order (can you imagine how pissed the people who bought PowerMacs with 3 month lead times would be?).

Legally it starts when you take delivery. Just like when you buy a car. The warranty does not kick in until you pay your money and drive it off the lot.

What exactly is "pre-ordering"? Ordering before you order?

Anyway, the AppleCare begins the day they ship the product to you, not the day you get it.

It is a moot point, however, as Apple is very flexible about working with you for a few days of AppleCare uncertainty. They are not going to argue over how long it took to ship it to you if they are delays.

pre-ordering is ordering before it is in stock. many retailers use the term for things like music and dvds that haven't come out yet. amazon.com also uses it to describe the "status" of the macbooks. i'm very surprised that you have never heard of the term.

i thought you were just doing some Jerry Seinfeld-schtick.

Now that other people have mentioned it, i'm seriously considering Safeway insurance instead of Applecare.

It was George Carlin-esque. I was just making the point that the whole "pre"-this and "pre"-that is unnecessary.

Safeware Insurance is good but EXPENSIVE. About $200 PER YEAR for a Powerbook. And NON TRANSFERABLE. Applecare is transferable.

I had it for my last Aluminum Powerbook, mainly because the Aluminums are prone to denting.

The drawback of Safeware is you can't walk into an Apple Store and drop off your CPU. They must ship you a box. And they are not going to get parts as fast as Apple will. My machine was gone for 3 weeks while they waited for a motherboard.

But it is great if you are a clutz like me! They cover spills and drops.
