I have a 15" Powerbook. Recently I have had a weird problem with it going to sleep while I am using it. It is plugged in and set to never go to sleep. It will go to sleep even while I am typing on it. When I wake it back up it might stay awake for hours or go back to sleep before I even have a chance to reconnect to the network.

Has anyone heard of a similar problem? My first concern is that it may have a problem with the switch in the lid and it thinks the lid is closed. If it is something I can do in software I'd be happier.

Only time this has happened to me is when I think it's plugged in but the cable is loose and I run out of power. Make sure you have an orange or green light on the connector.

This is actually a consitent problem for over a week now. It happens whether I'm plugged in or not and with the battery at various charged levels. I have also changed the energy settings to various settings to see if it might reset something.

if you use a mouse/keyboard sharing program like synergy, when one machine's screensaver comes on, it triggers the screensaver for all the machines. That's the only thought I have...

Did you check the console to see if anything funny is going on there?

Unfortunately not. I installed a new system on an external drive to try and isolate if it was a software issue and it fell asleep twice during the welcome movie! I decided that this proved it was a hardware issue, probably a faulty switch causing it to think the lid is closed. Some people thought it may be getting to hot but it never felt hot and would be as likely to stay awake for an hour after re-awakening as not. I suppose it could be mistakenly thinking it was too hot.
