I have a Powerbook Wallstreet 266 right now. It sucks to say the least. I also have a liquid cooled overclocked AMD with Linux, so the iBook would be a secondary computer. I want to buy one from ebay- probably a 600mhz with DVD or combo drive. I'd just use it for movie watching, web, typing. Would it be fast enough for that kind of stuff, running X? I put X on the wallstreet and it is a total DOG.

i've got a 366 clamshell that i overclocked to 450. it has 10.4.4 on it right now and its usable for simple things like web browsing, msword, etc...i'd imagine a 600mhz would do fine, although i'd rather have an older g4 ibook for everyday use

I would hold out for a G4, at least 1Ghz. Shouldn't cost too much more now I think.

As a point of reference..

last month I bought my 900MHz G3 iBook for about $560 before memory upgrade or shipping. The way I saw it is that many elements are exactly or nearly so the same as the latest iBook. In effect I saw it as paying a premium of several hundred dollars for just a newer CPU. Said another way, a "jump" from my 300Mhz to the 900Mhz was a "95% solution" and my needs did not justify the premium for a G4 iBook.
bb iBook 300MHz / 278MB / 40GB / OS 10.2.8 / OS 9.2
iBook 700MHz / 640MB / 40GB / OS 10.3.9
iBook 900MHz / 640MB / 40GB / OS 10.3.9
PowerPC 604 / 72MB / 3GB / OS 7.5.5

If you max out the ram on the iBook it should run Tiger fairly smoothly.
